Salento by bike


Bicycle is the ideal way to discover Salento in southern Italy: get lost in the countryside and the farms overlooking the sea, breathe deeply, letting yourself be carried away by the sound of the olive branches that dance following the sirocco or the north wind. Salento is a region at the southern end of Apulia region, full of historic and landscape beauty, white beaches with christal water, amazing food and wines. You definitely would want to visit it and enjoy the simple, slow and true beauty of Italy with our advice.

To visit Salento by bike it is necessary to study a route, otherwise you run the risk of skipping some stage. The advice is to rely on the associations that organize bike tours and rent bikes, even electric, what you need is willpower and good legs. We offer you a tour in 4 stages of about 210 km (flat): enjoy it!


  1. Lecce – Otranto (48 km): Leaving from Lecce take the SP 289 then follow the marked cycling route that leads to the village of Acaya. After cycling through centuries-old olive trees continue to Vanze and Acquarica di Lecce until you see the sea, Otranto is not very far and the flat road makes the walk pleasant;
  2. Otranto – Leuca (55 km): Salento by bicycle is a unique adventure and this stage, characterized by continuous ups and downs, allows you to reach the towns of Porto Badisco, Santa Cesarea Terme and Castro following the SP87. Before continuing the walk, stop to sip a good coffee in ice with almond milk. The path up to Santa Maria di Leuca is characterized by the presence of prickly pears, fruits covered by a thorny bark and a fleshy and tasty heart;
  3. Leuca – Gallipoli (54 km): after stopping at Santa Maria di Leuca, change direction and head north on SP214 and SP91. The sea is on the left and the watch towers that once were used to defend the territory from the raids of the Turks stand out. The arrival in Gallipoli can be an opportunity to admire the ancient walls and alleys of the historic center; don’t miss fresh fish reataurants on the sea and the superb raw shellfish they serve!
  4. Gallipoli – Lecce (53 km): Salento by bicycle is an experience to do in spring or autumn, when temperatures are not too sultry or rigid. Taking the SP108 for 15 km there is still the sea to the left until Santa Caterina, at this point we turn to Nardò, location of many Italian movies of last years, pearl of the Baroque. Continue towards Copertino and San Pietro in Lama, as far as Lecce.
